Beyond the Quick Fix: Sustaining Well-being as a Long-Term Approach (Self-Care)
Be proud, admit it. How often have you had [or do you have] the sudden urge to “treat yourself” after a stressful week, a stressful conversation, a challenging meeting, a drawn out event [especially online] that you attended up to the very end?! There is nothing [so we think and say to ourselves] so soothing than the “quick fix” – that yummy sugary snack, or caffiene boost, that you know will jump start you energy; or the fleeting sense of calm after a yoga class; or a quick walk on the beach [while still stressing all the way].
But, let’s be honest, the truth and the reality is – true well-being isn’t about fleeting moments of indulgence. The fleeting moment is just that – fleeting!
Sustainable well-being is about cultivating an approach that nurtures our physical, mental, and emotional health over the long haul, for a very long time. Again. And again. And yet again.
The Myth of the “Quick Fix”:
Our current fast-paced, instant-gratification culture often leads us to seek “quick fixes” – even for our well-being as well! (or so we would like to believe). We grab a coffee to combat fatigue. We scroll through social media [for hours!} to escape boredom. We binge-watch (fill in your favour binge-watching) to unwind.
But these temporary solutions often leave us feeling depleted and even more stressed in the long run.
Building Lasting Well-being:
Sustaining well-being requires a shift in mindset.
Building lasting well-being is about creating sustainable habits. It is about prioritizing self-care as an integral part of your daily life. It is about embracing a holistic approach regarding all aspects of our well-being.
Here’s a couple of pointers on how to cultivate long-term well-being [the list is not exhaustive though]:
1. Mindful Self-Awareness:
- Pay Attention to Your Needs: Become tuned into your physical, emotional, and mental cues and needs. This starts, in the first instance, by recognizing when you’re feeling stressed, tired, or overwhelmed.
- Regular Self-Reflection: Take time to reflect on your well-being, identify areas that need attention, and set realistic goals for improvement.
- Journaling or Meditation: These practices can help you process emotions, gain clarity, and cultivate self-awareness.
2. Sustainable Habits:
- Prioritize Sleep: Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night. Create a consistent sleep routine and create a relaxing bedtime ritual.
- Nourishing Nutrition: Focus on whole, unprocessed foods that fuel your body and mind. Limit processed foods, sugar, and excessive caffeine.
- Regular Movement: Incorporate physical activity that you enjoy into your routine. This could be walking, dancing, yoga, or any form of exercise that gets your heart pumping.
- Mindful Breaks: Throughout the day, take short breaks to stretch, breathe deeply, or step away from your screen.
- Connect with Nature: Spend time outdoors in nature. Research shows that spending time in nature can reduce stress, improve mood, and boost creativity.
3. Building Resilience:
- Practice Gratitude: Focusing on the good things in your life can shift your perspective and enhance your sense of well-being.
- Cultivate Positive Relationships: Surround yourself with people who support, inspire, and uplift you.
- Seek Professional Support: Don’t hesitate to reach out to therapists, counselors, or support groups when you need help.
4. Prioritize Self-Care:
- Schedule Time for Yourself: Treat self-care as a non-negotiable appointment in your calendar. This could include anything from reading a book, taking a bath, or spending time with loved ones.
- Learn to Say No: It’s okay to decline requests that drain your energy or don’t align with your priorities.
5. Find Meaning and Purpose:
- Connect Your Passions with Your Life: Find ways to integrate your passions and interests into your daily life.
- Contribute to Something Larger: Find a cause or purpose that motivates you and gives your life meaning.
Sustaining well-being is a lifelong journey. It’s not about achieving a perfect state of balance but rather about developing a flexible and adaptable approach that allows you to navigate the challenges and joys of life with greater ease and resilience.
