Beyond self-care as a buzzword: Building a Culture of Self-Care
We hear, and read, about self-care everywhere: in articles, on social media, in small groups gatherings, among colleagues and students, and even in boardroom meetings.
BUT how do we move beyond the “self-care” buzzword and actually cultivate a culture of self-care everwhere – in our workplaces, communities, our homes, and most importantly in OUR OWN LIVES?
Let’s be frank, self-care might include yoga breaks, going on a nice retreat but is it also more and different. Self-care is ultimately about creating a systemic shift, a fundamental change in our understanding of what it means to thrive while concurrently taking care of yourself.
Shifting the Paradigm:
Thus – the first step is a paradigm shift, moving away from the “hustle culture” mentality which glorifies burnout, where biting the bullet, turning the other cheek [and how ever else “hustle culture” looks and materialises in your life] is the order of the day.
The paradigm shift is moving away from seeing self-care as a weakness.
We need to acknowledge that self-care isn’t (just) about pampering; it’s about investing in your well-being (both physical and mental well-being). This investment result in performance at your level best and living life [and your life] to the fullest.
Having taken care of the paradigm shift begs the question: How to build a Culture of Self-Care and in All areas of your live:
Lead by example [of what self-care takes and how self-care is actioned]:
- Leaders Champion Self-Care: Leaders who model healthy boundaries, prioritizing their own well-being, and openly encourage other to do the same cultivate self-care [while experiencing the impact of self-care themselves].
- Leaders Create a Culture of Open Dialogue: Leaders fostering open communication about mental health and well-being does not only make it safe for other to share their struggles but champions self-care as a natural phenomenon – applicable for all and in all circumstances.
Empower Individuals:
- In the work situation: offer Flexible Work Arrangements: Allow for remote work options, flexible schedules, and compressed workweeks to improve work-life balance.
- Provide Access to Resources: Offer pepole or inform people about assistance programs, mental health services, and resources for healthy living (yoga, meditation, dancing, hiking, etc.)
- Prioritize Wellness Initiatives: Offer or attend healthy lunch options, fitness programs, stress management workshops, and mindfulness training.
Building a Supportive Community:
- Encourage Collaboration and Support: Foster a culture of mutual respect, understanding, and support between individuals and within teams.
- Develop a Culture of Appreciation: Recognize and celebrate achievements, both big and small, and acknowledge the efforts of individuals, including yoursel.
Championing Mindfulness and Self-Reflection:
- Normalize Self-Care Practices: Encourage mindfulness exercises, meditation, and journaling as part of the workday (or yoga, dancing, hiking etc as mentioned above).
- Facilitate Reflection and Growth: Offer opportunities, and make use of opportunities, for people to reflect on their well-being, set personal goals, and identify areas for improvement.
Break Down Stigma:
- Openly Discuss Mental Health: There is a global need to create a culture where mental health is treated with the same respect and importance as physical health.
- Normalize Seeking Help: Encourage people to seek help from professionals when needed, without fear of judgment, stigma or retribution.
Ultimately, self-care starts with each individual and within each individual. Create Change from Within
- Set Boundaries: Learn to say “no” to requests that overwhelm you. Protect your time and energy, at work and at home.
- Prioritize Self-Care: Schedule time for activities (indoors and outdoors) that nourish your mind, body, and soul.
- Practice Mindfulness: Be present in the moment and focus on your breath, your body, and your surroundings.
- Seek Support: Reach out to friends, family, or professionals when you need help and sooner than later.
Building a culture of self-care is not a quick fix. It’s an ongoing journey.
A thriving society starts with thriving individuals.
Make self-care the norm, not the exception.
